Positive Signs for the Scottish Labour Market

Posted: 13th May 2021

There are positive signs in the Scottish Labour Market. Find out why it’s a good time to be in the market for a new job…

Candidates considering registering often ask if we are busy with jobs. Experiences over the past year have led them to think the answer will be no. However, the job market in many sectors is buoyant and with the further easing of restrictions hopefully, there is now a light at the end of the tunnel for all sectors.

What’s happening with permanent recruitment?

The Royal Bank of Scotland Report on Jobs found permanent appointments rose at the second-fastest rate since the labour market survey launched in 2003. Great news for candidates. Furthermore, April’s rise in permanent placements across Scotland – the fourth monthly increase in a row – was faster than that seen for the UK as a whole.

With the Scottish labour market continuing to perform well into the next quarter the RBS chief economist Sebastian Burnside said;

“It is a clear indication that companies across Scotland are stepping up hiring efforts in line with the easing of pandemic-related restrictions…The switch towards hiring permanent staff may also reflect improved confidence and a clearer outlook among Scottish firms.”

With regards to temporary vacancies, it’s a similar story with the largest increase since 2017. In contrast, many candidates remain cautious in regards to changing job at this time and so recruiters are finding shortages in the availability of candidates for both permanent and temporary opportunities. Top talent is at a premium, it’s safe to say it is a candidate’s market!

In conclusion, if you are considering a move and the time is right for you, then go for it, there’s no time like the present.
